New gun license applicants
- Gun safety course
To start with, if you are a new gun license applicant, may it be for an FID card or an LTC Ma, you are first required to complete a Massachusetts gun safety course. These courses are offered by both private companies and the local police department.
The gun safety courses Ma mainly cover the gun laws in Ma and also educate you on gun safety. You will learn about the parts of a firearm, how to load and unload one, how to fire a firearm in the gun range and also how to transport and store one. A gun safety certificate will be issued upon completing the course.
- Types of licenses
There are basically two types of firearm licenses that are issued. The first is the LTC Ma. This is a license issued to persons over the age of 21. This license is valid for 6 years. The application fee is $100.
The second type is the FID card Ma. This is a license issued to persons under the age of 21 but over the age of 15. Parental permission is required for applicants under the age of 18. The application fee for persons over the age of 18 is $100 and $25 for persons under the age of 18. The license is valid for 6 years.
Firearm license renewals
As aforementioned, the gun license Ma is valid for 6 years. After that, you will need to apply for a renewal. For a renewal, you don’t need to retake the gun safety courses Newton. You just submit a request at the local police department before the expiration date. If you submit the application before your current license expires, the current license remains valid until you get an approval or denial for a new license.
Applying for a gun license is not as complicated. However, there are strict requirements that an applicant has to meet in order to qualify for a license. Make sure you understand these requirements prior to submitting your application.
